BellSouth to Eliminate 3,000 Jobs
BellSouth to Cut 3,000 Jobs to Trim Costs As It Confronts Slowing
Economy and Increased Competition
By JUSTIN BACHMAN
AP Business Writer
ATLANTA (AP) -- BellSouth Corp. (NYSE:BLS
- news) said Thursday it
will cut 3,000 jobs, or just under 3 percent of its global work force, to
trim costs as it confronts a slowing economy and increased competition.
News of the job cuts came as BellSouth said it was barely profitable in
the third-quarter, falling short of Wall Street's expectations.
The Atlanta-based telecommunications company, the largest local phone
provider in nine Southeastern states, had about 103,000 workers at the end
of the third quarter.
The company said the cuts would be focused mainly on administrative
positions at its Atlanta corporate offices, and will not affect its
56,000 employees covered by the Communication Workers of America.
The union recently ratified a new contract with BellSouth.
BellSouth shares fell $1.10 to $37.95 in afternoon trading on the New
York Stock Exchange.
BellSouth plans to take a charge of $170 million to $200 million in the
fourth quarter to pay for the restructuring.
Most of the cuts will come from the management ranks of BellSouth's
headquarters staff, which has not experienced as much attrition as the
company expected in recent years, spokesman Jeff Battcher said.
``The economy has definitely taken its bite out of our business,'' he
said. ``Our residential lines are down for the last two quarters, and
competitors have taken 25 percent of our local phone lines.''
The job cuts were announced as BellSouth reported it earned $7 million
for the third-quarter -- break-even on a per share basis -- as it recorded
charges of 57 cents per share for equities losses, including a 3-cent per
share loss from its sale of 4.5 million shares of Qwest Communications.
Not counting those one-time items, BellSouth said net income was $1.06
billion, or 56 cents per share, compared to $1.03 billion it earned in the
same period of 2000.
The results were 2 cents below the 58 cents per share expected by
analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call.
Revenue for the quarter was $7.45 billion, up from $6.92 billion for
the same July-September period last year.
For the first nine months of 2001, BellSouth said net income was $1.78
billion, or 94 cents per share, down from the $3.10 billion, or $1.64 per
share it earned in the same span last year. Revenues were $22.00 billion,
8 percent above the $20.18 billion in the same period of 2000.
The results were helped by a 27 percent gain in data revenue to $1.1
billion. The company said it added 82,000 customers for its high-speed
Internet service, ending the quarter with 463,000. BellSouth still plans
to have 600,000 DSL customers by year's end.
Wireless telephone revenue grew 38 percent to $1.5 billion as part of
its 40 percent ownership stake in Cingular Wireless.
