COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS OF AMERICA

COUNCIL OF FLORIDA

March 26th, 2006

2006 SESSION NEWS  LETTER  I

 PAGES....... 9

BROTHERS and SISTERS,

The progression of legislation on Florida’s Capitol Hill leaves nothing for the imagination. Oh what a tangled web the corporate giants weave. When we think we have seen everything the giants jump out from behind a legislator and tell us how we should think. I am so glad that way back when I took on the mantra of “QUESTION AUTHORITY” for it has always worked well for me. I figure if they get PO”d at the questions we ask then your either asking the right questions to uncover the truth, or your about to uncover a non-truth. As we all know in these political years the truth has little or no place with this state or federal administrations legislation.

The pace has been swift as always but the quality, argument, and content will only fulfill the governors’ last year bequests for legislation for corporate America; leaving the citizens scratching their heads and dipping into their pocketbooks for many years to come. There are no sacred cows here; all is up for grabs to: dismantle; re-mantle; dissolve; move or remove oversight. Money is no object when it comes to an issue that is subject to constituently: The money will be set aside to fight it in court; or, a new law will be passed to undermine a recent decision of the Supreme Court; or, the legislators will try to pass a joint resolution to place on the ballot to undo what the citizens already have vote yes for. Yes that’s what is happening.

Remember the devious plan the governor was speaking about during the last elections? Off microphone: his “devious plan to undermine the class size initiative. Alive and well under the guise of funding: 65% of school budgets to be spent in the classroom, doing away with the class size issue entirely, but hiding within the same joint resolution for a legislative constitutional revision ballot initiative is VOUCHERS. Yes, vouchers made legal in the constitution. Yes undoing the Florida Supreme Court ruling calling vouchers un-constitutional last year may be on the ballot under a different heading. 65% of school budgets to be spent in the classroom. Will it pass? If it were to go to the courts like a citizens’ constitutional revision ballot initiative, it would not pass the single subject rule. The legislative, constitutional ballot initiative does not have a single subject rule and does not go before the court. Who will stand and say that, 65% of a schools budget is to be spent in the classroom, should not pass. There is 1 month to go. As you can see by the Citator notations we have been busy, there many more pending bills then in this report.

In Unity, Gail Marie Perry,   Chairman             CWA COUNCIL OF FLORIDA              PO BOX 1766 Pompano Bch. Fla.     33061             TEL./CELL 954 850 4055
